This guide provides hiring managers with an overview of the process for creating a new academic position, including which form to use, obtaining the required approvals, where to submit the request, and what happens once it has been reviewed by People & Capability.
Following this process ensures positions are aligned with ACU's academic frameworks, career pathways, and Enterprise Agreement requirements.

Provide key information, including:
All academic positions require a clear and structured position description that aligns with ACU's academic frameworks, career pathways, and Enterprise Agreement requirements.
Two key frameworks should be used when developing an academic position description:
Provide a short summary outlining:
Use action-based language (e.g. "Teaches", "Develops", "Leads") to describe the primary purpose of the role.
Develop responsibilities that reflect the core academic duties and ongoing accountabilities of the role.
Responsibilities should align with the relevant academic activity areas:
Ensure responsibilities reflect the appropriate academic level and clearly define expected contributions across these academic activity areas, including how workload will be allocated.
Refer to the Guidance on Research Appointments and the Academic Performance Matrices and Evidence (APME) Framework for detailed guidance.
Ensure the selection criteria align with:
The Capability Development Framework (CDF) describes the competencies ACU seeks to develop and support across all staff.
Select four additional competencies from the Capability Development Framework that are critical to the successful performance of the position. These competencies are listed within the Academic Position Request Form.
All positions must include the mandatory competency:
Ensure the selected competencies align with the responsibilities, academic level, and expectations of the role.
All academic position descriptions must include the following mandatory attribute:
Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and ethical practice principles and demonstrated knowledge of equal employment opportunity and workplace health and safety, appropriate to the level of the appointment.
